About us
Pomba Branca is a community resource of compassionate, dedicated, and passionate volunteers, committed to fulfilling the vision: “We can help each other" by providing practical and emotional support during the grief process and the end-of-life journey.
Who We Are
We are not a replacement or substitute for existing health care, social and religious services. Rather, we are a complement, providing what is often a missing element – a place for those on this journey to find comfort and compassion, and a valuable resource to help navigate the issues, organizations and needs that will most likely be encountered along the way.

We are open to all, welcoming everyone with open minds and open hearts – with the respect and dignity especially required during these difficult moments. You will discover a friendly, compassionate and non-judgmental setting.
How We Started
Carla Cavaco, a Tavirense, returned home after the passing of her 52-year-old Dutch husband. He had a very short end of life journey, with only one month from diagnosis until his last breath. Although Carla had the full support from her family, close and distant, when she looked for grief support in Tavira there was none to be found. This gave the idea of creating the Grief Cafes.
Carla’s husband had a very dignified passing and she felt the calling to help others have a dignified end-of -life journey. This is how and why Pomba Branca was created.
What We Do
We serve the community free of charge, offering an opportunity for each person to participate and contribute as they wish, so we help each other deal with the challenges that the end-of-life and grief journey presents.
Together, we are building a practical and community-backed end-of-life support system.
